Re-Imagining Ageing

Health & Care, Passivhaus, Social Housing, Sustainable Architecture

Designed as part of a RIBA run competition on behalf of McCarthy & Stone, the country’s largest provider of retirement homes, we were asked to re-think retirement housing for a new generation. Our architectural idea is based around a walled garden, enabling residents access to a rich landscape, with large south-facing access decks. Residents have access to a new type of social space, a doorstep space, for sitting and chatting with neighbours, reading a book or taking in the view.

We proposed a small gym within the central space, open to residents and the public. We included flexi-units, available for residents to rent, offering additional space for an office, spare bedrooms, art studio or pottery.

Designed to Passivhaus standard with excellent insulation levels, high standard of airtightness, efficient communal heating and mechanical ventilation to minimise running costs.
