(Park)ing event on St Vincent Street

The architects turffed a city centre parking space on Wednesday 21 June to contest the claim that Glasgow is one of Europe's greenest cities despite only 9% of land being public green space.

JGA enjoyed two hours' paid parking time on St Vincent Street from the comfort of their deckchairs and welcomed passers-by to a little slice of parklife. The event drew interest from parking attendants before they were promptly turffed the team off the space as the meter ran out.

Principal architect John Gilbert said: "We encourage people to think about the way city spaces are used in Glasgow.

"The Scottish Government predicts a 40% increase in Glasgow's traffic levels by 2021 so it's clear that steps need to be taken to discourage car use in the city and promote a healthier, greener lifestyle."

Following web coverage of the event, this story was covered in the Metro, Daily Record and German newspapers, Auto Built and Die Welt.

(PARK)ing was devised by San Francisco creative collaboration Rebar with their parking space takeover in 2005. The group have inspired an annual (PARK)ing Day celebration with 180 "parks" being set up in over 45 cities worldwide.
