John Gilbert Architects is delighted to announce an exhibition and series of events to celebrate our\u00a0<\/span>25th anniversary. Throughout April, May and June 2018 we are hosting an exhibition and talks which examine John\u2019s career, tenements, housing and debating their future.<\/p>\n

We are delighted to partner with Glasgow City Heritage Trust\u00a0to deliver this programme of events to celebrate John and the practice\u2019s contribution to the preservation of Glasgow\u2019s built heritage and the welfare of its inhabitants.<\/p>\n

Exhibition: Tales of Tenements\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Glasgow City Heritage Trust is hosting an exhibition of drawings and models showing traditional tenement types, details and scenes. John Gilbert\u2019s illustrations for the Tenement Handbook, Historic Environment Scotland and a myriad of local authorities provide a characterful and clear insight into the arrangement and construction of tenements, and have been an invaluable resource for those looking to understand or explain these buildings over the years.<\/p>\n

Tales of Tenements<\/em> will tell the story of John Gilbert\u2019s first forays into architecture and activism as a young man growing up in Northern Ireland in the 1960s and 1970s, before moving to Glasgow in 1976 and becoming involved with ASSIST and community action groups campaigning for healthy and well-maintained homes.<\/p>\n

John worked on tenement restoration projects throughout Glasgow and co-authored the Tenant\u2019s Handbook and The Tenement Handbook<\/em> while at ASSIST, before setting up John Gilbert Architects in 1992. The exhibition will include drawings of iconic Glasgow tenements such as Caledonian Mansions by James Miller on Great Western Road, and 33-35 Saltoun Street by Adam & Short (made famous by Avril Paton\u2019s Windows on the West<\/em>\u00a0painting) as well as found photographs and objects from John\u2019s personal collection.<\/p>\n

Prints of a selection of John\u2019s drawings will be on sale, with 50% of the proceeds going to support the Glasgow City Heritage Trust\u2019s ongoing work.<\/p>\n

Andrew McConnell of Glasgow Building Preservation Trust will discuss John Gilbert\u2019s life and career with him, from growing up in Belfast to his early career as an activist, restorer of buildings and an architect and setting up his own practice in Glasgow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They will discuss the in influences in John\u2019s life that have shaped his work and led him to focus his career on conservation and social housing. John will discuss the projects he has completed across Scotland, both with Assist Architects and as John Gilbert Architects, and also in support of community action groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This event will provide a fascinating insight into John both as a person and as an architect, and will be beautifully illustrated by photographs, drawings and objects from his personal collection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This double lecture will consider the development of \u2018The Tenement in Glasgow\u2019 from their original design and construction, through to periods of decay and neglect, and then subsequent restoration and preservation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

John Joseph Burns, an architect in Glasgow, will discuss his research into the tenement as an architectural typology in Glasgow. Showing examples of the early tenements that rose around the High St through to the inter-war tenements of the 1930s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Douglas Robertson of the University of Stirling will then discuss the factors that contributed to the neglect of tenements, the emergence of movements and organisations focussed on saving them, and the policy that followed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this event panellists will discuss a wide range of issues relating to the future of the tenement in Scotland. Topics will include ongoing maintenance and repair, adaptability of the tenement type, the design of contemporary tenements, and the future role of housing associations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
