This project started life as a refurbishment project but this proved too expensive, once VAT was taken into account so a new house and outbuildings has been designed and built to Passivhaus standards and will be certified. Insulation used is sheepswool and woodfibre while an ‘Octopus’ ductwork system has been used to complement the high performance Paul MVHR unit.
Natural materials have been specified throughout with an eye to low embodied energy, local sourcing, low toxicity and zero waste options. Materials such as the structural timber have not been chemically treated to avoid the health risks associated with timber treatment and most external materials (timber, slate and aluminium) used are naturally durable without additional treatment or coatings.
Planning and Building Warrant were achieved in 2014 and work started late that year. With Client Joe working part-time on the project progress has been deliberately slow, but the workmanship is immaculate and materials choices ideal, so the finished building should be one of the highest quality projects we have ever delivered.
